Outreach Activities – On campus

We offer a series of workshop activities either on campus or in the city centre of Lincoln. The following events are available for you to book, but we are also keen to offer bespoke events tailored to the interests and needs of you or your students. Workshop 1

Title: Bridge Building

Participating programmes:

  • Construction Science and Management

Duration: 1 – 1.5 hours

This workshop consists of a brief introduction to bridge design and construction, and a fun and engaging hands-on activity to introduce pupils to some basic principles of structure, stability and aesthetics in architecture and construction, using Jenga blocks and bamboo sticks.

Workshop 2

Title: Measure the Invisibles

Participating programmes:

  • Architecture
  • Architecture Science and Technology
  • Construction Science and Management

Duration: 1.5 – 2 hours

This workshop introduces principles of sustainable design, as well as sensors and measurements that are involved in monitoring energy performance. Pupils will have the opportunity to Use environmental measuring equipment to measure light, sound, thermal imaging and so on, and create their own environmental evaluation report.

Workshop 3

Title: Urban Sketch

Participating programmes:

  • Architecture Science and Technology

Duration: 2 hours

This workshop takes a group of pupils on an architectural trail in Lincoln, showing quick sketch techniques to capture the urban context. Pupils should bring sketch book/pad and pens/pencils with them, as well as warm clothes.

Workshop 4

Title: Digital Skills Bootcamp

Participating programmes:

  • Architecture
  • Architecture Science and Technology

Duration: 2 hours

This workshop improves pupils’ digital skills and introduces them to basic architecture modelling and image processing software such as SketchUp, Photoshop, and AutoCAD. A variation of this workshop focuses on a more advanced environmental simulation software such as Design Builder.

Workshop 5

Title: Invisible Cities

Participating programmes:

  • Architecture

Duration: 2 hours

This workshop introduces Italo Calvino’s ‘Invisible cities’ text to the pupils as inspirations for them to construct a themed image collage of a city using a variety of media. This workshop exercises their artistic interpretations, construction of urban space and the understanding of architecture as a social and cultural agency.

Suitable for: key stage 3, 4, BTEC and A-level pupils.


Workshop 6

Title: Groundlab

Participating programmes:

Duration: 2 hours

Groundlab is an exciting new creative design studio, developed for the Sincil Bank community by the University of Lincoln in collaboration with the city of Lincoln Council. The creative hub itself is a shipping container. We host a range of activities within and around the shipping container located at the heart of Sincil Bank. For details please see Groundlab.
